Oral hygiene is important not only for your oral health, but also
for your overall health, as recent studies have shown. Oral health
has connections to heart disease and diabetes. Good home care and
regular dental cleaning and check-ups can help to maintain optimum
oral health.
I like to treat each patient as an individual with care that is designed
to meet their specific needs. Not everyone is the same, and not everyone
needs the same type of routine oral care. For the average person and
child a Prophylaxis that includes light ultrasonic and/or hand scaling
and polishing is all that is needed. For the person with more involved
periodontal disease and pockets that need to be monitored and maintained
a Periodontal Maintenance is indicated. For the individual who has
let maintenance slide a Full Mouth Debridement as well as a Prophylaxis
is probably the indicated treatment. For the more advanced gum problems
and years of calculus (tartar) build up it may be necessary to do
Quad Perio-scaling or Root Planing with a local anesthetic in order
to insure removal of all plaque, tartar and bacteria below the gums.
Also, the additional placement of a local slow-release antibiotic
in infected areas may be necessary. In order to maintain your oral
health your hygienist may recommend a 3,4 or 6 month cycle of cleaning
appointments depending on your particular needs.
Remember delaying treatment or stretching it out to save a few dollars
now may result in costing you much more in the future as well as jeopardizing
your oral health and stability of your teeth.
Prevention and regular dental care is always the least expensive and
best way to maintain your oral health.
